q      Review amateur eligibility guidelines – complete sample questionnaire

q      Consider visiting campuses and attending a game – non-official visit

q     Register to take the ACT, SAT or both and use the Eligibility Center code (9999) as a score recipient.     

q      Re-take SAT / ACT and be sure to forward grades to the NCAA Clearinghouse

q      Calculate your GPA and class ranking

q      Identify 30 college programs that meet your academic and athletic goals

q      Request information from the school admission offices or review their website for admission details.

q      Apply to college

q      Apply for financial aid at the schools selected, if applicable

q      Collect and documenting your academic achievements.

q      Prepare a list of questions for coaches

q      Talk with your coaches and others to express you goals about playing collegiate sports

q      Prepare an athletic profile that you will update during the recruitment process.

q      Begin collecting articles, awards and statistics regarding your athletic accomplishments.

q      Create a system to organize your research and information you will receive from collegiate programs. 3 ring binder with tabs. Folder system

q      Assemble a group of people that will support you and provide you guidance over the next several years

q      Review the NCAA College Bound recruiting guidelines. Be sure you understand the recruiting guidelines and timeframes so you do not violate the NCAA recruiting rules.

q      Contact coaches expressing interest in their programs.

q      Upon receipt promptly complete and return athletic profile sheets you receive from coaches

q      Compete in highly competitive programs to gain exposure and build your athletic profile

q      Register with the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse

q      Obtain letters of recommendation from people that are aware your athletic abilities

q      Send your athletic profile and video to programs you have interest in participating

q      Follow-up with coaches two weeks later via email or a phone call

q      Arrange to have games video tapped so you can begin compiling highlights of your abilities

q      Arrange to have a skills video compiled that provides coaches an overview of your core athletic competencies

q      Complete amateurism questionnaire and sign the final authorization signature online on or after April 1 if you are expecting to enroll in college in the fall semester. (If you are expecting to enroll for spring semester, sign the final authorization signature on or after October 1 of the year prior to enrollment.)

q      Have your high school guidance counselor send a final transcript with proof of graduation to the eligibility center.

q      Register with Free Application for Federal Student Aid www.fafs.ed.gov

q      Many families make the mistake of not filling with the FAFSA.  Assuming they believe their family income is too high. 

q      The first date you may apply with the FAFSA is January 1 of senior year.
