Tips when communicating with coaches


  • Be proactive - Contact coaches via email or a phone call.  Find the program you want to play in and go after it
  • Be compliant - follow the rules and regulations of NCAA
  • Be accurate - Complete online forms accurately
  • Be timely - Do not wait till your Senior year to contact coaches
  • Be respectful -  address the coach by his name
  • Be specific - use the school name in your communication
  • Be smart - state why you want to be in their program and why you qualify
  • Be thorough - provide an athletic and academic profile:
    • Complete name
    • Address
    • Telephone number
    • Email address
    • High school name with complete address
    • Graduation Date
    • College major
    • Position(s)
    • Awards / leadership roles
    • Special sport event(s)
    • Years of JV and Varsity experience
    • Relevant statistics
    • Current coach's name and contact information
    • GPA, ACT, or SAT scores and honors
  • Be prepared - offer DVD and skills assessment video
  • Be available - schedule and location of games or where the coach could see you play
  • Be ready - offer recommendations from coaches, teachers, etc. upon request
  • Be organized - keep track of who you contacted and when
  • Be patient but be persistent - follow through if you don't here from the coach after 30 days
